3 Must-Visit Anchorages for Your Croatian Yacht Charter

Three Must-Visit Anchorages for Your Croatian Yacht Charter

Croatia offers some of the most captivating cruising grounds in the Mediterranean, home to over 1,200 islands featuring everything from unspoiled nature to rich cultural heritage. But with so many options, finding the best spots to drop anchor can feel overwhelming.

At EB Yachts Solutions, we’ve spent years creating personalized itineraries throughout the Adriatic.

In this article, we share a list of three anchorages that are consistently named as client favorites, and for good reason. Each offers something distinct, whether seeking peace and quiet, a taste of history, or something off the beaten path.

Mljet

Mljet

For those looking to disconnect and recharge, Mljet is arguably the most serene destination in the Adriatic. Much of the island is covered by national parkland, with dense pine forests, two saltwater lakes, and a relaxed ambiance far away from busier parts of the Croatian coast.

The pace is slower here, and that’s the point. It’s the kind of place where swimming in still, clear waters, walking through quiet trails, and dining under the stars on deck become the highlights of the day. If you value nature and tranquility, it’s a must.

Where to anchor

Polače Bay offers protection and is conveniently located near the national park entrance. For a quieter setting, the eastern anchorage near Saplunara is known for its rare, sandy beaches and peaceful surroundings.

Dont miss

If time allows, hop on the tender to St. Mary’s Island in the middle of Veliko Jezero (the larger of the two lakes) to visit the 12th-century Benedictine monastery. The lakes are perfect for swimming, with calm saltwater and excellent water visibility.

Local Insights

Mljet is known for its goat cheese and honey, both locally produced and available at small village shops. Ask your chef to incorporate them into dinner on deck as the sun sets over the forested coastline.

Vis

Vis

Vis offers something few other Mediterranean anchorages do, a sense of authenticity that’s been preserved by decades of isolation. Once a Yugoslav military base, the island only opened to foreign visitors in the late 1980s, which means much of its charm has been left intact.

With its combination of history, nature, and a relaxed atmosphere, Vis appeals to those looking for something more grounded and less commercial. It’s a great balance between cultural stops and low-key coastal cruising.

Where to anchor

On the southern coast, Stiniva Bay is a standout, a small, pebbled beach surrounded by cliffs, accessible mainly by boat. For a livelier atmosphere, Komiža on the island’s western side offers a charming fishing village with good mooring options and local restaurants.

Dont miss

Make time to visit the Blue Cave on nearby Biševo Island. Around midday, sunlight reflects off the seafloor, creating a glowing blue effect throughout the cave. It’s a short trip by tender and well worth it. You can also arrange a guided tour of the island’s military tunnels to glimpse its Cold War history.

Local Insights

Vis is particularly proud of its wines. The Vugava grape is native to the island, and a visit to Antonio Lipanović’s underwater wine cellar offers a memorable way to experience it, quite literally aged in the bay.

Cres Croatia

Cres

Cres is one of the lesser-traveled islands in Croatia, but for those willing to venture north, it offers a completely different experience. The island’s dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear bays, and lack of crowds make it perfect for guests seeking seclusion and natural beauty.

Unlike the more built-up islands further south, Cres feels quieter and wilder, an ideal stop for yacht charters that want to slow the pace and enjoy a more off-grid experience without sacrificing comfort or charm.

Where to anchor

Ustrine Bay is a tranquil, well-protected spot with calm waters, perfect for swimming or an overnight stay. Valun, a small harbor town on the west coast, offers a relaxed stop with access to local dining and a bit of exploration ashore.

Dont miss

Cres is home to one of the last nesting colonies of griffon vultures in Europe. Keep an eye out for these impressive birds along the eastern cliffs. With its narrow alleys and Venetian architecture, the historic town of Cres is also well worth a stop.

Local Insights

The island is known for its lamb, raised on wild herbs growing freely across the hillsides. Ask your crew to arrange a traditional lamb dinner at one of the family-run konobas (restaurants) tucked away in the interior villages, it’s an authentic local experience that pairs perfectly with the setting.
